Is Ukraine the Next Afghanistan for Russia?

Connecticut Democrat Chris Murphy told Jake Tapper with CNN that a Russian invasion of Ukraine would be a “mistake of historic proportions.” It is a mistake that the collective West is desperate for Russia to make. See the segment below:

President Joe Biden announced he would introduce sanctions if Russia invades Ukraine. It is, of course, odd to call a country an ally but refuse any direct military assistance if she is attacked. What can we call this but an open invitation for Russia to “cancel” Ukraine?

The reality is that there is no logical reason for Russians to bother Ukraine unless one of the “red lines” is crossed. The biggest red line is Ukraine joining NATO. That realistically can’t happen. It hasn’t happened in 30 years, and probably won’t ever happen. NATO is an alliance, and an alliance is only as strong as its weakest member. Ukraine is teetering on the verge of becoming a failed state, making talks of her joining NATO in 2021 are just as fruitless as they were in 2020, 2019, and all the years before that. Ukraine’s odds of joining the EU are perhaps even lower. As the poorest country in Europe, joining the union would be a one-way relationship. Ukraine would qualify for massive amounts of aid, but be unable to offer much in return. Furthermore, Ukrainians would enjoy open borders with the West. Would Germans appreciate millions of Ukrainians flooding into their country looking for jobs and social benefits? Unlikely. All that leaves Ukraine as little more than a chess piece to provoke the Russians.

So-called “nation-building” has proven to be a failure. So now, the West seems to enjoy deliberately creating failed states in and around Russia’s sphere of influence. See my earlier post about Afghanistan.

This leaves another question on my mind, which I have asked before, but still don’t have a clear answer. Why is our government so obsessed with Russia?

  1. At times the behavior of our rulers makes me think of a line from A J P Taylor discussing Germany’s motives in the Moroccan crisis when they seemingly had no important interests at stake. “Perhaps they wished to prove that nothing could happen anywhere in the world without their permission”. To the extent that we have a rational motive it may have something to do with the rivers of cash that seem to flowed out of Ukraine and into the pockets of the Washing ton establishment. Who and what that money bought is anyone’s guess.

I’ve also wondered how actually serious this war scare is. I’m not sure if Russia is even capable of taking the Ukraine. Maybe the Biden people think they can burnish Joe’s image by backing the Russians down from a military move they aren’t all that interested in making. As for the Russians, they showed an impressive ability to fox our intelligence people when they moved on Crimea. The Russians knew everything they needed to know about or technical collection capabilities because they got that from Snowden, and they were able to achieve surprise. I honestly think if they were planning a move on Ukraine that our three letter agencies would be the last to know.

    • Man Who Laughs,

About the war scare, I’ve had the same question myself. Here’s my conclusion.

Russia has open borders with all the countries it is allegedly preparing for war against. It’s literally easier for a Ukrainian to live and work in Russia than it is for a Mexican to enter the USA. Odds of war are zero.

  4. Randolorian, it's actually a bigger non-story than people are letting on. If there was an actual ambition to cut off Ukrainian transit fees, they could have already done this with NS1, which isn't even at 50% capacity yet.

  5. This Democratic Senator is a typical piece of the sh.t West. Fifth double hypocrisy and stupidity.
First he cries for gun laws in US because kids are dying.
Then he blame the Senate for not sending more guns to Ukraine. Then he cry Putin will regret it if Russia defends themselves against 8 years of bombardments, sanctions and insults.
Then he is so stupid he thinks Russia dont know what they are doing in Ukraine. Today he and his pals are running backwards whining that Putin must not erase guns and introduce gun laws in Ukraine…..because kids are dying …………………….LOL.
