SecDef Austin: USA Prepared to Defend Ukraine from… Soviet Union

Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin accidentally referred to Russia as the Soviet Union during a press conference with South Korean Defense Minister Suh Wook in Seoul today. That was a bit of a Freudian slip.

“Whatever we do will be done as a part of an international community. The best case though is that we won’t see an incursion by the Soviet Union into the Ukraine.

-SecDef Lloyd Austin

I hope the Soviet Union doesn’t invade anybody, since it hasn’t existed for 30 years. Austin, like the rest of the Biden Administration, seems obsessed with the Cold War. But if the Soviet Union Russian Federation does invade Ukraine, what would Biden do about it? Secretary of State Antony Blinken answered this question in a statement this week:

We’ve made it clear to the Kremlin that we will [act] resolutely, including with a range of high impact economic measures that we’ve refrained from using in the past.

-SecState Antony Blinken

The Ruskis are no doubt trembling in their boots, but there is a key point missing from this discussion. Why would Russia invade Ukraine, and what would they gain from it? Russia has more than enough problems already – are they really excited to be burdened with Western Ukraine, one of the most impoverished countries in Europe?

A much more likely explanation is that there is no threat at all. This is just a way to distract the American public from problems back home.
